I was typing Notes For Future Survivors at the same time as I gained access to the photographic archive of Timothy A Mousseau. Since 1999, Professor Mousseau and his collaborators have explored the ecological and evolutionary consequences of the radioactive contaminants affecting populations of birds, insects and people inhabiting the Chernobyl region of Ukraine, and more recently, in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This access allowed me to survey a site that was out of bounds and to witness its distorted rewilding.
